DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (Aug. 20, 2018) – Grace Senior Living has earned second place in a photography contest highlighting active residents cultivating hydroponic tower gardens at 13 senior living facilities across the Southeast operated by Legacy Senior Living of Cleveland, Tenn.
Lori Schoolcraft, the life enrichment coordinator for Grace Senior Living, took the prize with her award-winning photograph of resident J.S. Spradlin.
“When I first learned of the competition I quickly went to my residents and told them about it,” Schoolcraft said. “They were thrilled and could not wait to get out there to see what we were going to plant. We discussed whether to plant lettuce, cucumbers or cherry tomatoes. Once they agreed lettuce was the perfect fit for the tower gardens, they went right to work, checking growth progress, water levels and root health every other day.”
Alongside the obvious physical and mental benefits of tending a garden, residents are also enjoying the nutritional and life-affirming fruits of their labor. So far, residents have used the lettuce for hamburgers as well as salad and tuna on lettuce. They look forward to enjoying the next harvest in more delicious ways in the Grace Senior Living dining hall.
“As they picked the lettuce, they talked about when they were younger doing their own gardening with their parents and even their children,” Schoolcraft said. “We had a wonderful time talking about our memories and how excited they are they can do this again!”
